Etymology:Latin, referring to the funnel-shaped spore base
Description:Pigmented spores formed singly in soil or in clusters of 1 to approx. 20 spores surrounded by an entire or partial coarse mycelial mantle. Spores often with a funnel-shaped spore base. Spore wall normally consists of two or three layers. Outer layer hyaline and often sloughing with spore maturation. Spores normally occluded by a septum in the subtending hypha distal to the spore base. Spore development is like that depicted for species in Glomus. The SSU sequence CGGTCATGCCGTTGGTATGY is specific for species in the genus delimited thus far.
Type species:Endogone mosseae T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.

Schüßler & Walker (2010) designated “Rothamsted G. mosseae” as the ex-epitype, which is deposited in BEGNet as accession BEG12.
